Many Jeep Wrangler owners with 3.8L V6 engines can testify to the amount of oil residue that can accumulate inside the intake manifold, at the throttle body, around the PCV hoses, in the intake track and even at the air filter during the harsh driving conditions of off road use and daily driving.
Problem: An excessive amount of oil vapor is produced by the 3.8L V6 Jeep Wrangler engine and that vapor when reintroduced into the intake manifold is detrimental to the power output your engine!
The Best Solution: The Dual Filtration Media Air Oil Separator and Catch Can by Arrington Performance. The primary filter is the industry standard woven steel wire media pre-filter which traps larger particles and oil droplets. The secondary filter of our American Made catch can is a cross woven dual layer crankcase filter by Green Filter USA. This filter has two layers; one fine, and one medium layer; producing a fabric that is thinner and stronger than other materials and has the ability to trap dirt and oil down to 5 microns. This filter come pre-treated with a specially formulated dirt trapping oil. This oil creates a positive magnetic charge, or ionic bond, with the filter’s stainless steel mesh. The positive charge attracts the negatively charged engine blow by gas particles entering the filter, causing them to cling to the steel mesh and allowing the cotton to remain clear for maximum airflow. Along with the dual media the O-ring sealed design of the can creates a larger surface area than the competitor’s cans to provide greater filtration and catch more oil in the can.
If you have built a high-performance off road engine, or even if you drive your stock Jeep every day, you may have noticed this oily film in the engine bay. This is normally caused by excessive crankcase pressure forcing oil vapor out of the motor. Jeep engines are equipped with a factory PCV system that catches much of this oil and returns it to the intake to be burnt but what happens if that system is clogged or if the check valve malfunctions? There is no need to worry! This is actually normal. That’s right. It is normal for your engine to have oily residue all over it and put oily film all over your engine bay that eventually will build up and drip off or cake up in small valleys. The filtration media filters the oil and particulates out of the blow by gasses while the oil catch can catches the oil that is filtered and forced out of the crank case so it doesn't cause a mess. In addition to keeping down the mess, this option will keep the oil and particles forced out of your engine during operation from reentering your engine and causing buildup that shortens engine life and decreases performance.
When the PCV system functions as designed there can still be negative effects if excess oil vapor contaminates the intake system. If this system malfunctions there is no backup! As a driver you may not know there is a problem until you notice decreased power, increased engine noise, or check engine lights.Some problems that can be caused by oil vapor reentering the engine are:
- Throttle body and/or MAFS (Mass Air Flow Sensor) sticking, malfunction or failure
- Air filter and intake ducting contamination: When oil pools in the intake manifold it can run back through the throttle body and into the intake system after engine shutdown.
- Reduced octane of the air/fuel mixture: This can cause detonation thus causing the ECM (Engine Control Module) to retard timing ultimately reducing engine power.
- Excessive carbon build-up on valves, piston crowns, combustion chambers and spark plugs: This condition decreases engine life and power while increasing the chance of detonation.
- Increased emission gasses from burning oil: If left unchecked this can cause contamination of catalytic converters and cause malfunction of your Jeep’s exhaust oxygen sensors.
Note: Some competitions, off road parks, wooded area trails and track day events, may require the use of an oil catch tank. The use of these catch tanks keeps the outdoors clean and free of oily residues produced by vehicles under heavy use conditions. In addition to the outdoors, many on track rules agencies state that this measure keeps cars from dripping oil on the track which increases the likelihood of on track accidents.

Other catch cans on the market use puny fittings that have smaller flow paths than the PCV system hose. We ran the numbers and proved that these restrictions can lead to pressure building in the crankcase, so we super-sized our fittings to 1/2" NPT meaning our catch can is the only one on the market that can support a full 5/8" flow path.
